Recreation Programs Manager

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Develops, organizes, markets, develops budgets and supervises a wide variety of recreation programs and special events, particularly programs designed for children, senior citizens, and fitness programs. Coordinates information and publication of department's program guide. Coordinates the Park Legacy program.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

1. Develops and manages a variety of recreation programs and special events including, but not limited to: fitness classes, youth theatre, and senior programs; establishes and oversees program budgets; hires and instructs program instructors and other part-time staff; schedules and assigns instructors to programs; observes instructors and evaluates performance in order to ensure a high level of quality and responsiveness to perceived needs of residents and users. Initiates new ideas for recreation programs and follows through on programs with supervisor's approval.
2. Administers the operation of the summer day camp programs, including hiring, training and supervising staff of approximately 45 part-time seasonal employees and 15 volunteers, budgeting, developing of camp schedule, marketing and conducting evaluations in order to respond to needs of participants.
3. Develops and coordinates the publication of twice yearly program brochures by compilation of information, writing text, proof reading and collaborating with a printer in order to create a high quality, informative and accurate publication for the residents and users. Creates printed program material such as flyers and posters for distribution.
4. Develops, coordinates and maintains informative and accurate web page information for areas of responsibility.
5. Coordinates department use of social media and issues social media messages and campaigns.
6. Assists with maintenance of parks and recreation registration software, including coordinating program listings and online registration system for areas of responsibility.
7. Manages the Kirkwood Park Legacy program, including preparation and distribution of promotional brochures, assisting potential contributors in determining their needs and ability of program to meet those needs, coordinates procurement and installation of donated equipment, notifies donors of status of donation projects, establishes and maintains appropriate records on donations projects.
8. Maintain partnerships with various organizations to support recreation programs such as special events and senior programs.
9. Assists in the supervision and operation of recreation facilities, including the community center, aquatic center and tennis center.
10. Assists in the conduct of special events, such as the Greentree Festival and Kirkwood to Webster Run.
11. Works with Inclusive Recreation Coordinator to facilitate inclusion of individuals with special needs in recreation programs within area of responsibility.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

1. Minimum of three years full-time recreation programming experience preferred
2. Considerable knowledge of recreation programs and trends
3. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
4. Experience with desktop publishing programs and concepts
5. Two years supervisory experience
6. Valid driver's license
7. Bachelors Degree in parks and recreation, leisure studies or related field, or equivalent experience in the parks and recreation field involving recreation programming. Bachelors Degree from NRPA accredited program or CPRP certification preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office setting and various program locations, both indoor and outdoor settings in a variety of climatic conditions.
