Project Engineer

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Oversees construction activity on road and bridge projects for the City to ensure construction methods and materials are in compliance with established standards and specifications. Development of project

specifications, provides construction management, contract administration, grant administration and inspection for public works improvements. 

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles related to street, road, and bridge construction, storm water drainage, water distribution and surveying.

 Knowledge of Federal, State, County, and City laws affecting public works, buildings, streets, and road construction.

 Knowledge of MoDOT, AASHTO and/or Federal construction policies, standards and specifications is desirable.

 Knowledge of ADA/PROWAG design standards and field applications.

 Ability to read and interpret right-of-way and construction plans.

 Ability to perform various construction materials testing to detriment contract compliance.

 Knowledge of AutoCAD and G.I.S. systems.

 Ability to enter and inspect construction projects and determines if specifications have been achieved.

 Develops specifications, contract documents, engineering drawings, and cost estimates for public improvement projects.

 Communicates effectively, verbally and in writing, with City officials, contractors, and the general public.

 

 MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

 Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, with advance education and Missouri professional engineering registration preferred.

 Two years of engineering experience, preferably municipal.

Valid Driver's License.

 Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineering license desirable.

 MoDOT Technician Certification and/or ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1, preferred.

 

MENTAL EFFORT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 Perform bending, squatting, kneeling, walking, climbing (stairs and ladders); must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 60 pounds; must be able to hold and grip objects; may be required to stand for long periods of time; must be able to move about construction sites to perform inspections.

 WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENT AND POSITION RELATED HAZARDS:

 Both indoor office environment and outdoors working environment.  Outdoor working environment includes exposure to a variety of extreme weather conditions and subject to unleveled and uneven working surfaces (construction sites).  Exposure to health hazards associated with construction activities, i.e., asbestos, dust, fumes, extreme noise, and odors.  Individual to work 40 hours a week between Mondays through Friday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).  Individual must be available to work flexible hours and evenings and weekends and be available on call for emergencies.
