PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Employees in this classification are responsible for public assistance, patrol, enforcement of park jurisdictional regulations, and security of recreational grounds and facilities.

SUPERVISION:

Employees in this classification are responsible to the immediate supervision of the Senior Park Ranger and directly to the Superintendent of Parks.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for patrolling the following grounds, buildings and related facilities:
    • Kirkwood City Park
    • Greentree Park
    • Emmenegger Nature Park
    • Walker Park
    • Koestering Park
    • Monfort Park
    • Firemans Memorial Park
    • Bill McEntee Memorial Park
    • Fillmore Park
    • Mitchell Park
    • Meacham Park Memorial Park
    • Kirkwood Aquatic Center
    • Kirkwood Community Center
    • Avery Park
    • Grant's Trail Trailhead
    • Kirkwood Performing Arts Center
  • Assist with closing and monitoring activity at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center
  • Document all activities and observations through the use of daily activity logs, permits, additional reports; and submit reports in a timely manner.
  • Secure all buildings, equipment and grounds in accordance with park closing procedures.
  • Ensure park patrons have vacated the premises prior to park closings.
  • Assist park patrons by providing directions to facilities, interpretation and other types of assistance as needed.
  • Issue warnings and tickets for infractions against park rules and city ordinances as authorized that occur within the parks.
  • Ensure all other employees (concession stand, tennis shop, community center, aquatic center) are escorted safely out of the park at closings.
  • Ensure that lights for athletic fields are turned on and off and required equipment and/or supplies delivered in a timely fashion.
  • Monitor sports field's conditions and update rainout line as needed.
  • Check sites and athletic fields for condition and cleanliness after permit holders have left.
  • Notify Park Superintendent of damage, vandalism or any unsafe or malfunctioning situations, and where possible secure situation temporarily to insure public and employee safety.
  • Perform security for special events/emergencies.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Valid Driver's License.
  2. Participation in related ranger-training programs.
  3. Able to obtain CPR certification annually.
  4. Must obtain valid Watchman's License OR Security Officer license from St. Louis County Police Department.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of all patrolled grounds, facilities and access points to those areas.
  6. Comprehensive knowledge of standard law enforcement procedures and practices used in public relations, policy enforcement and communication with police.
  7. Comprehensive knowledge of hazards and public safety elements associated with the existence and use of recreational resources.
  8. Skill in self-defense/baton tactics and protection of the public.
  9. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully to co-workers and the public.
  11. Ability to think/act clearly in emergency situations.
  12. Ability to effectively communicate/work/liaison with members of police, other City departments and other agencies.
  13. Must have a minimum three (3) years' experience in public safety, military or law enforcement to be considered.

WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENT, AND POSITION RELATED HAZARDS:

Works mostly outdoors in all weather conditions. Exposure to dust, ice, snow, heat, rain, and physical hazards associated with working in this environment.
