Lead Water Equipment Technician

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


  1. Performs maintenance, repair and replacement of pumps, motors, electrical equipment, electronic equipment and telemetry at two storage tanks, two elevated towers, three interconnections and six pump stations.
  2. Monitors SCADA system operation and troubleshoots malfunctions of SCADA system and related instrumentation and equipment.
  3. Collects water samples and conducts bacteriological and chlorine analyses.
  4. Reads several Missouri-American meters at interconnects at least twice per month.
  5. Repairs and replaces water meters.
  6. Assist with water mains repairs as needed.
  7. Investigates and resolves customer complaints regarding low pressure, low flow, high water bills, leaks and water quality.
  8. Performs product and system research regarding the maintenance, repair and replacement of pumps, motors, electrical and electronic equipment, and telemetry.
  9. Performs one-inch through two-inch taps, and tap destroy inspections.
  10. Locates meter boxes, curb boxes, taps, and service lines.
  11. Maintains sufficient inventory of water meters, pump station/interconnect/SCADA system equipment, sampling and laboratory equipment.
  12. Performs duties with a high degree of safety in the work place, complies with and enforces all city and department safety policies and requirements.
  13. Reads City water meters using electronic reading equipment.
  14. Required to be on call at times by cell phone and/or pager and rotate on call weekends with other support services employees.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED


  1. Knowledge

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of equipment and practices used in the installation and maintenance of pumps, motors, electrical and electronic equipment, and telemetry in water distribution systems.
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of materials, equipment and practices used in the installation of service lines, taps, meters and meter boxes, curb stops and boxes, and fire service vaults and appurtenances.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of materials, equipment and practices used in the installation and maintenance of pumps, motors, electrical and electronic equipment, and telemetry in water distribution systems.
  4. Knowledge of laboratory analyses for bacteria and chlorine.



  1. Abilities

  1. Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctioning pumps, motors, electrical and electronic equipment, and telemetry equipment.
  2. Ability to use testing equipment to diagnose equipment malfunctions.
  3. Ability to understand and interpret plans and schematics and manufacturers' maintenance manuals.
  4. Ability to determine causes of low pressure, low flow, high water bills and water quality complaints.
  5. Ability to effectively follow and carry out oral and written instructions.
  6. Ability to communicate concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  7. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the general public.
  8. Ability to effectively operate a pipe locator and metal detector.
  9. Ability to effectively operate a personal computer, printer, two-way radio, fax, and copier.
  10. Ability supervise and work with minimal supervision.
  11. Ability to climb water tanks and towers for maintenance and inspection using proper safety protocol.



MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


  1. High school diploma or GED required.
  2. Minimum of five years' experience in the water utility industry preferred.
  3. Must possess a Missouri Department of Natural Resources Level III Certification for Water Distribution.
  4. CDL class B driver's license required.



WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENT, AND POSITION RELATED HAZARDS:


Combination of indoor and outdoor working environment. Some overtime.
