Fire Engineer

PRIMARY PURPOSE:


Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical procedures, hazardous materials response, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.


SUPERVISION:


Under direct supervision of a Fire Captain.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:


May assist to coordinate, instruct or supervise the work of new recruits or other departmental personnel, as assigned.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  1. Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, calculating friction losses in various sizes of hose and pipes, and providing attack crews with water in adequate volumes and pressures. May perform fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks as appropriate.

  1. Performs emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.

  1. Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medicine, hazardous materials, and related subjects.

  1. Receives and relays fire calls and alarms; operates the radio and other communication equipment.

  1. Participates in the inspection of commercial occupancies as part of the department's fire prevention program.

  1. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains, and tests apparatus and equipment.

  1. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency medical activities.

  1. Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.

  1. Assists in supervising firefighters as required.

  1. Assists in training new employees as assigned.

  1. Presents public information classes or programs as directed.


A. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:


  1. Working knowledge of driver safety, fire apparatus, hydraulics, emergency equipment, fire pumps, and fire ground activities.

  1. Working knowledge of tools and equipment.

  1. Working knowledge of firefighting, emergency first aid, hazardous materials response and fire prevention techniques.

  1. Ability to perform at peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme height, intense heat, cold or smoke and exposure to bodily fluids.

  1. Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.

  1. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

  1. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  1. Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

  1. Ability to apply standard firefighting and emergency first aid techniques to specific situation.

  1. Ability to perform at peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme height, intense heat, cold or smoke and exposure to bodily fluids.

  1. Working knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques and equipment; superior knowledge of basic life support skills.

  1. Ability to meet the special requirements listed below.


MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


  1. Five years of experience with the Kirkwood Fire Department

  1. Fire Officer I (NFPA 1021)

  1. Fire Instructor I (NFPA 1041)

  1. Driver/Operator (40 hour) or Driver Core with Pumper (NFPA 1002)

  1. ICS/NIMS 100, 200 & 700

  1. Hazardous Materials Operations

EQUIPMENT USED TO PERFORM THE JOB:


Emergency medical equipment, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, radio, pager, personal computer, and phone.

  1. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.
